Our StoryWe first came to the town of Gracias, Lempira in 2011 to teach at a bilingual school. While teaching, we became invested in the community of Gracias, and in the life of a particularly under-resourced family in our neighborhood. As we grew close to this family, we learned that their oldest daughter, Karla, was intelligent and eager, but also that she would not be returning to school after her last year of legally compulsory education. Her parents, who sell food from a cart on the side of the highway, could not afford the cost of supplies and uniforms needed for even a public education.
It soon became clear that our involvement in the Minerva Bilingual School put us in the perfect position to connect these children, and others, to the educational opportunities that were unavailable to them. We took this idea to friends and family in the United States, and through their overwhelming support, we were able to enroll Karla in the school where we were teaching in January 2012. Her sister Ada and brother Sergio joined the school soon after. In the following years, we also expanded the opportunity to study to Estephany as well as Kenneth (read more about Our Students). At One Family Honduras, Inc., we're dedicated to providing a high-quality, bilingual education for the these children, and others like them who are otherwise unable to attend school. Recognizing that providing an education for these children entails more than just securing funding, we commit to serving their needs inside and outside of the classroom and working with their families in order to ensure that they receive a holistic and life-changing education. Our story and the relationship that we have with this family is the backbone of our organization. We're thrilled that you're interested in learning more about what we do, and we hope that you'll join us in our mission.
